I have written a Professional Cricket scoring app called Ultimate Cricket Scorer for Windows 8/8.1. Ultimate Cricket Scorer for Windows 8/8.1 PC/Tablet comes with absolutely no Ads, not asking or recording any personal/device information. It does not require a Data plan or a Wi-Fi connection to use as I found those as an annoyance when we score at the ground. It helps the user professionally score the cricket game seamlessly with minimum touch or mouse input and without committing too many mistakes. It also takes care of many nuances in the games like rotating the strike, determining the max overs for a bowler, match equations and also helps the user by giving the equation of current and required run rate, balls from runs equations etc. The app has a Ribbon scorecard at the Top to give the use all the necessary match information at a glance and grouped in one single place and also provides graphs such as Manhattan and Worm as they score on the same screen The Match Settings provides many knobs to the user to customize the number of overs, players, number of runs for wides / no-balls, Max overs for bowlers etc. There is an undo and clear option to undo the lastly scored ball and clear scoring control selected before proceeding to the next ball. Last but not the least, the user can export and download scorecard in csv format.
The Match scorecard is fully colored dark themed and the batsman on strike and the bowler are highlighted in blue for better viewing. Both the teams’ scorecard can be viewed by swiping or by mouse controls.

The downloaded scorecard has much more information such as
1. Batting Team scorecard – Batsman name, Ball by Ball progression, How out, 1s,2s, 3s 4s, 6s, dots , strike rate
2. Bowling scorecard – Bowlers name, ball by ball bowling, maidens, runs, wides, no-balls, economy.
3. Fall of wickets card on runs/batsman name/partnership/ over instance. This can help in post processing and excel sheet formatting.
4. Partnership – Runs/balls for both batsmen and Total Runs. This can also help in excel sheet formatting of the scorecard.
5. The worm coordinates for comparative run rate and Manhattan coordinates for runs per over are also exported to the scorecard.
6. Ribbon scorecard that gives all the much needed match information at a single glance.

The Ribbon scorecard at the top gather all the match equations for the user in single glance and contain
1. Batting Team and Fielding Teams score.
2. Current over progression/bowler
3. Current and required Run-rate
4. Required runs from balls/overs equation

Cricket scoring is the process of recording all runs scored, all wickets are taken and, where appropriate, the number of overs bowled. A scorer is a person who is responsible for recording the cricket score.

The scorer must always accept and record the umpire signals as given.

There are two methods used in cricket scoring; manually and computerized.

In this method, the scorer uses a scorecard(scorebook) and a pen. A scorecard (scorebook) is a pre-printed book and these are available in different styles.

Simple score books allow the recording of each batsman’s runs, their scores and mode of dismissal, the bowlers’ analyses, the team score and the score at the fall of each wicket. More advanced score books allow for the recording of more detail, and other statistics such as the number of balls faced by each batsman.

Manual paper scoring is complicated and a trained scorer needs to score matches. On the other hand, online scoring is easy and does not require any prior knowledge or training.

Cricket Scorebook Basics (understand cricket scores)

These are the different symbols used for different type of score/stat in a traditional scorebook. Let’s learn how to use these symbols and how we can read a scorebook.

Look at the image above, the ‘circle’ symbol indicates NO BALL and the runs are marked inside the circle if the batsman hits the ball and scores in the NO BALL.

In some situation, the wicketkeeper misses the NO BALL and the batsman run BYES or the ball runs to the boundary for 4 byes. In that case, each BYE marked with a ‘dot’. These are known as NO BALL EXTRA.

The + symbol is used to represent the WIDE. In a wide ball, if the batsman run BYES or the ball hits the boundary for 4 byes, it is marked as a dot(as shown in the above picture).

Now let’s learn how to interpret the real data. Below image is the data of 3 overs of a bowler. Can you read the score of each ball?

  1. The first ball bowler bowled is a dot ball
  2. The Second ball, a no-ball, and bowler hit and run three runs.
  3. Next ball is a dot ball.
  4. This ball is a wide off which the batsmen run 2 byes
  5. Another dot ball.
  6. Next batsman scored 1 run.
  7. Batsman scored a 4.
  8. The last ball is a dot ball

In the over summary is written as 12-0, which means 12 runs for 0 wickets. Can you read other two overs?
